Acura’s new NSX supercar has finally made its debut in production trim, appearing this week at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. It was at this event that Acura confirmed the car’s sophisticated hybrid drivetrain will deliver at least 550 horsepower, allowing it to accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 4.0 seconds and keep up with rivals like the Ferrari 458 Italia and Lamborghini Huracán.

However, in an interview with Auto Express, the car’s chief engineer Ted Klaus hinted that Acura is already looking at a hotter Type R variant.

“I think everyone who loves cars wants to see a version that we say is pure red, ” Klaus responded when asked about the possibility of an NSX Type R (the Type R badge has a red background). “Someone asked me, ‘when will you be satisfied?’ Probably never. What you do today, you can improve on tomorrow.”

Fans of the original NSX will recall that a Type R version was launched in 1992, two years after the debut of the standard model. Called the NSX-R, the car was modified for improved track performance and included upgrades such as stiffened suspension and a lighter curb weight.

The Ferrari 458 Italia was the benchmark Acura used to develop its new NSX but a more potent version of the Ferrari is due out this year and there’s also a new Audi R8 just around the corner, so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for a hotter NSX.

The new NSX is set to go on sale this summer and is expected to be priced around $150k.
